「Jazz and Yaris」
車にはまるで興味がないけれど、むかし博多駅近くのホテルの駐車場で働いて
いたので車種にはまあまあ詳しい。
その当時すでに開業から数十年を経たそのホテルの立体駐車場は極めて使い辛
い代物だった。何年か前の水害で浸水して以来機械が動かないので上段部分が
使えない上に、車を入れる枠が80年代の仕様になっていて、ちょっと大きな車
になるともう枠に収まらないのである。クラウンのロイヤルサルーンはなんと
かねじ込めてもマジェスタはダメ。もちろんセルシオもレクサスもダメ。更に
上段の枠に車の天井が当たるのでセレナもデリカもステップワゴンも入らない。
そんな駐車場に昼飯時になると地下にあるランチバイキング目当ての客が押し
寄せるのである。いきおい、押し寄せる客を断るのが駐車係の仕事になってし
まうのだが、客たちは勿論我々の云うことなど聞かない。何しろ彼らはそのホ
テルで食事をするためにやってきて、バイキングレストランはホテルの駐車場
に停める客には２時間無料の駐車券を漏れなくばら撒くのだから。店も客も駐
車係のことなどお構いなしでキーを付けたままの車を「あとはお前らがなんと
かしとけ」と云わんばかりに放置して去って行くのである。仕方がないので我
々は車を通路の邪魔にならない場所へ移動する。万が一ぶつけたり擦ったりし
ようものなら法外な修理代を請求されるのは云うまでもない。小さな車でもタ
イヤを枠の溝に入れるコツが掴めずに何度も切り返すような客の時には後が支
えると面倒なのでやはり我々が代わりに運転して入れた。そんな難しい接客が
素人の集団に務まる筈もなくて、我々は実にしばしば客と揉め事を起こして上
司に叱られた。上司はそのまた上司に叱られた。何年かしてホテルが駐車場を
「タイムズ」に委託して無人化を図ったタイミングで我々も部署ごとリストラ
された。ひどい仕事だったが、いまほど世の中が殺伐としてなかったのかなか
なか楽しい職場だった。
まあそんなわけで色々な人の色々な車に乗ったです。
その時驚いたのは、乗っている人々の外見の凡庸さとは裏腹な、車の中のあま
りの多様性と無法ぶりで、それは車に対する愛があるならあるなりの、無関心
なら無関心なりの様々な表現がそこにあって何かを主張していたのである。
いつだったか「Tokyo Style」という東京の若い独身者の部屋を撮り集めた
写真集が売れたことがあったけど、それもこれも誰か他人の心の中に入ってい
く体験に違いない。写真ならある程度好きなように撮って編集できても、
車の中はただ剥き出しであるだけだからそれは面白いこともあり、時には気味
が悪い。監視カメラがありとあらゆる場所に設置されるご時勢にあって、車の
中はまだかろうじて自由と闇が残されてある場所だと云えるのかもしれない。
少なくとも今のところは。
それにしても日本人の車愛は世界でも独特なんじゃなかろうか。世界を隈なく
歩いたわけではないが、人々が車をこんなにいつもピカピカにして走らせてい
る国を僕は寡聞にして知らない。天体観測にきた少年が望遠鏡を車のドアにコ
ツンと当てて悲しそうにお父さんに謝るという車両保険のCMはいつ観ても不愉
快。車なんて僕にとっては外を移動するただの乗り物だけど、どうも多くの日
本人にとってはそうではないらしい。
日本車の特徴は何と云ってもその性能の良さにあるのだろうが、加えて車種の
数も凄まじい。比較的自動車事情の似たドイツと比べてみると、両国主要メー
カー１３社で現在までに市販された車種の数は、日本が約９００種、ドイツが
約４００種（バス、トラック、二輪車は除く。青鮫堂適当調べ）である。車種
をどうカウントするのかという点については、果たして「カローラ」と「カロー
ラⅡ」を別々したものかどうかといった問題もあって正確な比較は難しいもの
の、それにしたところで差は歴然としている。山ばかりの狭いこの日本で一体
どれだけの車が走っているんだろうか。渋滞がこの程度で済んでるのは日本の
都市計画の秀逸さを物語っているのかもしれないし、宇沢弘文先生が
『自動車の社会的費用』（岩波新書、1974年）で云うように「市民的権利の侵
害」が粛々と進められた結果なのかもしれない。自動車産業に依存しない国づく
りがこの日本にあり得たとしたらいま目の前にどんな風景が広がっているのか
是非観てみたいけれど、そんなのちょっと想像できない。国土面積の狭さを除
けば、自動車と日本人はよほどシックリと相性が合っているように見える。
車種にいちいち立派な名前が与えられているというのもよく考えてみるとすごい。
欧州車名など記号と数字ばかりである。アメ車には大体名前があるがシンプル
なものが多い。複数の意味とイメージを組合せて新しく名前を創ったりするこ
とはアルファベットを使って生活している彼らには難しいことなのかもしれない。
その点日本車名は自由奔放である。思うがままに色々な願い期待が込められた
カラフルな名前が目白押しで面白い。これも日本人の車愛を示す一例と云える
だろう。
ところで、日本車が海外で販売される時車名が変わることがあるのを知ってますか？
事情は幾つかある。商標登録の問題。日本人にはあまり意味がなくても行った
先の国では何か予想外の意味と響きがあって使えないこともある。あとは日本
と海外での販売戦略の違い。じゃあ実際にどんな海外名があるのかというと、
恐らく最もインパクトのあるのは三菱パジェロの「ショーグン」。これはイギ
リスのミステリー作家R.D.ウィングフィールドのフロスト警部シリーズの中に
も名前が出てくる。トヨタアクアはプリウスC。マツダデミオはMAZDA2。バン
コクの通りで頻繁に見かけたこともあって僕が気に入ってるのは「ジャズ」と
「ヤリス」。「ジャズ」はホンダフィットの、「ヤリス」はトヨタヴィッツの
海外名。デミオと同じくフィットもビッツも日本ではコンパクトカーの代表である。
この手の車はおばちゃんや若い女の子、小さい子供のいる家族向けという印象
がある。マーチとかノートとか名前も見事に人畜無害で面白味がない。日本の
車好きはコンパクトカーにはまず乗らない。その人畜無害な使い勝手の良さが
彼らの日本における存在意義であったとしても、その名前から察すると、海を
渡った彼らの使命は違うものだろう。「Jazz」もかっこいいが、「Yaris」は
何だか神秘的で好きだなあ。しかもヤリスは「ヤリスWRC」にパワーアップし
てFIA世界ラリー選手権に参戦したりもしてるのである。そういうのって何だ
か僕には痛快に思える。こう何て云うかクラーク・ケントがスーパーマンに変身
するみたいな感じ。あるいは、平凡な男が（女でも良い）流れ着いたどこか見知
らぬ町で過剰な期待を背負わされた挙句に自分の中に眠っていた意外な一面を
発見して道を切り開いて行く、みたいなビルドゥングスロマン的な感じで。
そしてこの平成が終わる新しい年に、「ヤリス」はとうとう日本に凱旋を果たす
のである。トヨタはヴィッツのフルモデルチェンジを機に名称を「ヤリス」に
改名することを発表した。へぇ～、so。
